From Sunny to Stormy in a Flash

In Florida, sunny summer days can turn stormy almost as quick as lightning! Boaters need to be prepared! What to do? Pay attention to the weather, like cloud formations (development of anvil-topped thunderheads), increasing winds and dropping temperatures. Wear your life jacket. File a float plan with someone before leaving home, or at least informally tell people where you're going and when you plan to return so a designated person can let authorities know if you don't show up. (Then be sure to let that person know when you are safely home so they don't launch a needless search!) Make sure you have the required safety equipment on board and if you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, take the required boating safety course! Finally, inspect your boat regularly for signs of wear and tear, learn navigation rules and then get out there and have a good time!
